Microsoft recently acknowledged that some built-in Windows 11 apps may have stopped working in the past few days due to expired certificates. A few apps were affected, including the Snipping Tool, Tips, and Getting Started. A new fix for this issue is now available for Windows Insiders on the Beta and Release Preview channels with update KB5008295 for Windows 11.
This is actually the second round of fixes Microsoft has released for this issue. A few weeks ago, Microsoft released KB5006746 with build number 22000.282. This update fixed broken apps including Input Method Editor, Touch Keyboard, and a few other apps, but this is an optional update and you have to download it manually from Windows Update. Also, the Snipping Tool still suffered from this issue and if you are using Windows 11 in S mode, some system features were also broken, such as the Start menu and the Accounts page in the Settings app.
Update KB5008295 for Windows 11 fixes expired certificates and corrupted system features for remaining application. However, once again, this update is not ready for everyone. If you want to get this update right away, you will need to join the Windows Insider Program on your PC. This update will not change the build number of your operating system; so if you want to confirm that you have installed the hotfix, you should look at your update history in Windows Update.
If you need the fix right now, there’s not much risk in joining the Release Preview channel. It is essentially the same version as the stable Windows 11 version and you can easily disable it after installing the fix. However, if you can wait, this fix will likely be included in next week’s Tuesday Patch. On that day, Microsoft will release another cumulative update containing all the fixes that are currently in preview, followed by some.
Windows 11 has had a few hiccups since its initial release, which isn’t uncommon at any major software launch. These issues include poor performance on AMD processors, which has been partially fixed with the aforementioned KB5006746 currently in preview. Another fix is available directly from AMD as it relates to the chipset driver. As these issues are fixed, upgrading to Windows 11 will be even more challenging.
